Sukhothai was founded in 1257 after the Siamese had driven the ruling Cambodians out of this western outpost of their great empire, and the prince who led the campaign became Siam's first king.

Before wandering around the massive compound which usually takes a full day, first time tourists are always recommended to go to the Ramkhamhaeng National Museum for a brief history of this once splendid kingdom. The glory of Sukhothai is reflected in the abundant ancient temples and Buddha image stuccos, ruined brick pagodas as well as laterite viharn columns. There are more than a hundred sites in the whole complex many of which are worth visiting. Apart from the sacred charm of the ancient city, Si Satchanalai and Ramkhamhaeng National Parks retouch the green colour and the scent of nature to the province with a fascinating view of various cascades in the fertile mixed forest.
